Roll roll roll your epoxy

0

Conditions came together today for the epoxy coating of more boat parts. This had to be postponed from yesterday, when I felt that weather conditions might lead to "outgassing", a condition where tiny air bubbles seep out of the wood and become stuck in the fresh epoxy, ruining the appearance. Also, yesterday was taken up with Christmas decorations around the house, and an office Christmas party. So today as many seat surfaces and bulkheads as I could fit on my work bench were given the first coat. Hopefully, I can get these and some other parts ready by Tuesday, when we expect some unusual cold. With daytimes highs expected to not get above freezing, it will be weather more suited to sanding than epoxy. Total hours 12.00.

How to Stuff or Drape or Sit on your Kid while Sailing your Singlehander

0

Lots of parents (especially, it seems, the Dads) take their kids out on their small singlehanded dinghies. The kids quickly discover that their comfort is secondary as they hang on, or get plopped into a corner, or sat on.

In this video it appears the father needs all of the Sunfish cockpit for himself. His daughter is to fend for herself on the deck, hanging onto the splash rail. Given her grins, this precariousness only seems to heighten her enjoyment.

In this video of a father/son sailing a Europe Dinghy, our little tyke, Benjamin, must do an intricate dance with Dad on every tack. Tacks are at the 1:30, 3:31, 4:30, 8:26, 11:35, and 16:17 mark in the video. Despite getting rolled over by Dad on every tack, our stoic Benjamin seems to warm up to the sail after a while.

Luke I am your father

The process of bonding scarf joints is coming to a close. The final pair of side planks was epoxied this morning, and tomorrow I will do the bottom panel of the hull, which is a bigger job, and the alignment may be a little more complicated. After that, a laborious process of coating each piece of lumber with epoxy begins. Two coats on each strake, bulkhead, transom, and seat panel are needed to give the wood parts total waterproof-ness. A big part of the job will be sanding between each coat. This is necessary to produce a smooth finish when the assembled boat is painted and varnished. According to the kit instructions, the dust from sanding can be irritating, and the silica can be detrimental to health. So with a respirator to protect against dust, and a headset to cut the drone of the sander, I am ready to soon enter the next phase of boat building. Total hours 4.00.
