From a Russian forum thread on the Classic Moth (whew! Google does a horrific job of translating Russian to English) comes a photo of forms set up to do a Mistral build.
Update - January 8, 2015
Sergei provides some background on this Classic Moth build.....
"The Moth is being built in Moscow region by Serg-IF(nickname on boat forum) according to your boat plans. It is planned that Moth will strike the water of Oka-river this spring. As for me I plan to build my Moth this spring. Hope that Ill have enough time for that. Also there is one more guy from Tsimlyansk (it is on Don river) who interested in your Mistral. It could be he will start building. He have a huge experience in boatbuilding and sailing.
At first glance, the following video of a catamaran flying a hull, with the crew stacked on wings, looks ordinary enough. Then you realize the wind is maybe two knots max! And then you realize the upwind headsail covers the span of the whole cat, from the bowsprit to the back corner of the transom! Thats one way to get a ton of light air horsepower and jack up the VMG
This is one of the Swiss Lake classes, the M2 catamaran class which is the smaller cat class (there is the large M1 class).
I read this morning that a new wooden boat is nearing her launch. The Godspeed is a reproduction vessel modeled after one that brought some of the first European settlers to North America. She was built by Rockport Marine in Maine, and the company web site describes the project:
Godspeed is a replica of one of the three-boat flotilla that came from England to America in 1607 to found what became the first successful English colony in the New World. She is being built by Rockport Marine for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation of Williamsburg, Virginia, and will be used as a fully operational display vessel at the Jamestown Settlement living-history museum. Her design was created by Tri-Coastal Marine of Richmond, California.
A nice pictorial of the Godspeeds move from the shops to the shoreline, and the stepping of her main mast is here.
As for my own, somewhat smaller boat building project, I hope to return to it tomorrow. We have weekend guests visiting, and I am doing my Chicagoans rendition of southern hospitality. More soon: stay tuned!
I went over last weekend to help George A. of Mid-Atlantic Musings> move one of his boat collection into a U-Haul. It wasnt a Moth but a Penguin and was being collected by her new owner. Georges Penguin dinghy was one of six originally built in the 1960s by a guy named John Walton in Brigantine, New Jersey. This Penguin, most likely being the sole survivor of the six, was being rightfully reclaimed as a family heirloom by Johns son Bill, who had flown up from Texas.
In the photo below, George is going over the history of the Penguin with the blogmeister. Turns out George helped build the six as kid. He was on the centerboard trunk building crew. (Forgive the odd colors of the photo but I wanted to highlight the beautiful interior wood of the Walton Penguin and was working from a very dark I-Phone photo.)

And from the 1960s, here is the blurb on the Penguin from the magazine One Design and Offshore Sailing annual small class review, .
Every once in a while I intersperse all my posts about planing boats, or racing, or boatbuilding with videos of people just enjoying a daysail and a day on the water. The wind is perfect, not too strong, not too light, the sun is out, the water temperatures are good for swimming. Sailing is best done with the feet up and a smile on the face.
The Dutch Valk klasse is similar size and original concept to the U.S.A.s Lightning class though with a squat traditional gunter rig. It appears the Dutch build them in fiberglass for recreational sailing - the PolyValken. (I think they reserve the wood ones for racing.) By the looks of this video, the Valk fits the recreational role superbly. (I like the cross thwart at the aft end of the cockpit allowing the skipper to recline and steer at the same time.)

Jolle segeln is German for dinghy sailing. Here is a daysail in a true classic German dinghy, wood with traditional fittings. (Video settings doesnt allow me to embed.) Im not sure what the class is, maybe a reader can help out.
A couple of years ago it occurred to me that, if you reworked the massive rig downwards, the Aussie Historical 6-Footer skiff, would make a crazy, traditional singlehander. To that end I sketched out a cut-down sail plan which I present here.
As always, use the pop-out icon on the top-right hand to open the drawing in another tab.
Mesmerizing "rockin and rollin" downwind in some breeze off the coast of Ireland. I like how the skipper steers from a relaxed, sprawled position (which probably isnt relaxing given the pull on the rudder... just looks that way).
For some reason my favorite drone sailing videos are the ones filming the American scows - (there is more Over here ). This video features fleet racing in the big monster ILYA scow, the As.
Plans de Moth Classique A Moth European Championship sailed in Algiers, Algeria (at that time a département - administrative region - of France - see Tillermans comment). Looks like the late 1950s, early 1960s. We can see the transom-bowed French Fragniere Moth design as well as the scow bowed Nantais design. (The British Queen Mother makes a short appearance at the beginning of the video.)
The second set of strakes were stitched to the hull today, and things looked a little more boat like. The hull is taking a little more of its own shape, and depends less on weights and chocks to maintain a curve to the bottom panel. Interestingly, as I twisted wires, I listened to a PBS television show about the sinking of the Republic, a civil war-era freighter carrying a large cargo of gold coins. A commercial venture recovered the coins, while also retrieving some archaeological artifacts. May my little boat never experience anything that interesting! Total hours 23.25.

Sometimes I cant help myself. Ill sit down at the computer and push the lines of an existing Moth design in another direction. This is one of those creations. I took the Fragnière design, the French design with the transom bow, and made it a three planker. (Three planker means if you look at the 1/2 model, the design consists of three plywood planks - never mind that the bottom rocker plank is actually one contiguous panel when whole.)
Why? Because I can. I would expect this design to be somewhat quicker offwind but slower upwind in a chop and light air. No plans to build this anytime soon as I have enough projects all ready.
Here is the PDF file of the offsets. Click on the pop-out icon on the top right (hover your mouse pointer over the top right corner to find it) to get this into another tab where you can print or download the file.
Another modified Fragnière (it looks like the transom bow doesnt match the plans). A 2001 build in France. I like the purple hull color.
Erratum: This is actually the French Bilbon design which was patterned after the French Caravelle dinghy and not the Fragnière.
Offsets for my other modified French Moth design, the Zippy can be found by clicking here.
Over the years this blog has featured some of the oddball regattas/sailing races where you take your oddball small sailboat and compete against a bunch of other oddball small sailboats. During the fall season there is enough of these events you could, if so inclined, hop-scotch up and down the East Coast of the United States.
They are (in roughly chronological order):
Sebago Cup - mid-September at the Sebago Canoe Club, Brooklyn N.Y.
A one race jaunt around Jamaica Bay. Im sure they would be delighted to see some out-of-town visitors and been told, even though this is Brooklyn, there is plenty of parking around the club. See comments for more info from SCC members.
SEBAGO CUP ----- September 19, 2015 Our annual cruising race! This is an open class cruising race open to non-members. Fleets will be created upon the participation of at least two boats of the same class. Contact sailing@sebagocanoeclub.org for more information. CLASSIC WOODEN SAILBOAT RACE, Sunday ---- September 27, 2015 NOR
MASCF (Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival) - First weekend in October, St. Michaels Maryland.
This is more of an event than sailing race but there is, on Saturday, a one-lap sailing race in the river starting around noon that is quite a hoot. I have done it twice in my Classic Moth Tweezer where I was racing in a division featuring a motley assortment of larger craft including Thistles, Core Sound 17s, Blue Jays, Celebritys, log canoes.

Pollys Folly - mid-October, Megunticook Lake, Camden, Maine.
Hosted by John and Polly Hanson. This is a small affair, hosted out of their lake-front cabin around the time of Maines fall foilage.
Archipelago Rally - early-November - Somewhere in the state of Rhode Island.
In a twist on normal advanced scheduling, the organizers wait until about two weeks before the event before announcing the location. A one lap race, usually going around something.
"A piece of furniture" we would often say as we eyeballed those McCutcheon or Souter built Classic International 14 dinghies, cold-molded in mahogany, glowing with multi-coats of varnish, all joints carefully crafted, beautiful wood everywhere. I was reminded of superior dinghy craftsmanship when I came across this stunning photo of the interior of the most recent addition to the historical Australian 18 foot skiff fleet, the reproduction Myra Too.
Myra Too was built in 2013 by Bob McLeod to reconstructed lines (by Australian National Maritime Museum curator, David Payne) of the 1951 championship winner. Myra Too was originally built and raced by Aussie legend, Billy Barnett. To build the reproduction hull, Bob McLeod used silver ash and, in the inner and outer layers of the hull, Queensland red cedar (the outer layers used rare, full-length pieces estimated to be between 400 to 600 years old).
Here is the original post on Myra Toos construction from the Australian National Maritime Museum blog.
From YouTube comes what, at first view, looks to be a typical mast-head GoPro video -- this of the historical 18 footer Yendys going around the course, However, with the historical 18 footers nothing is typical. Of interest to me was the spinnaker set starting at about 1:50 into the video. It takes four crew members to get the mammoth spinnaker pole out onto the mast, three of them heave-ho pushing and a fourth slotting the multi-piece pole together as it goes out. Once out, this long, long spinnaker pole then wags all over the place as they go downwind. These pre WWII 18s were heavy dinghies with lots of crew and this video shows that they pushed a lot of water around as they bashed around the race-course.
The history of Yendys from the Australian National Maritime Museum blog.
"A rival of Britannia, Yendys was built in 1925 by Charlie Hayes for Norm Blackman. This big hull is also built in the traditional heavy scantlings, but it illustrates an early piece of innovation, its transom bow. Hayes had another legend working for him at the time, Charlie Peel, who had been successful with transom bows on 14-foot skiffs in Victoria. As well, the 1920s was the time when the Restricted 21s showed how fast a lighter-keel boat could go, and Hayes and Peel were in the thick of this class too. Out comes Yendys, with its sawn-off profile and veed bow shapes, a sort of restricted-class yacht crossed with a skiff and with the bow overhang squared off. Despite the odd mix it went pretty well too, but although another two snub-nosers were built in that time, the idea did not catch on. It did show there was room to move in the rules, though, and the Queenslanders took on both innovation and the establishment at the same time."
And a post featuring a photo of a pretty deck on a 505.
For the name of our Passagemaker dinghy, Kathy and I agreed on Fuggles. The name has significance for us on several levels. Fuggles is the name of a variety of hops that are used to flavor several types of traditional English ales, including the ale style called India Pale Ale, or IPA. This is special, since it ties in one of my other hobbies- homebrewing. Kathy started me on the hobby during our first Christmas together, and since then, I have won a few awards with my brews, and had lots of fun along the way. Fuggles was christened with a splash, not of traditional Champaign, but of an IPA from Portland, Maine. Although Fuggles was built in Alabama from a kit made by a Maryland company from wood grown in Africa, the spiritual home of all wooden boats must be Maine. The state is home to many shipyards that craft fine sailing and motor vessels of wood using traditional techniques. Also, the famed Wooden Boat School is located in Maine, and is instrumental in preserving the skills needed in the building and maintaining of beautiful wooden boats of every type.
It is immensely satisfying to sail in a boat one builds himself. May Fuggles sail safely for many years to come.

The problem with purchasing pre-made boat strategies that are sold in many DIY stores is that theyre never made to your own specifications. Maybe you do not need the hull to be the manner its in the strategy, maybe the width you need is not same.
Needless to say, the apparent remedy to this difficulty is to design the strategies yourself. But creating your own wooden strategies is not the most easy of matters.
